If you have to monitor an entire network, pinpointing where problems arise can be a time consuming and painstaking tasks.
InterMapper is designed to help identify network problems before users or customers suffer serious down-times or outages. It works by sending it regular network pings to test connections and what are called "synthetic transactions" to test your most critical applications. In this way, you should be alerted to email, web, or directory server problems before they have chance to cause major problems.
It goes without saying that Intermapper is mainly aimed at network administrators and IT specialists. However, even they may struggle with the interface which doesn't make finding all the various functions easy. That said, the user guide to very clear and even those new to network management should be able to get up and going in a few hours. Also, if you do what to use it on a home network, you get 5 licences free but if you want to use it on a corporate or large network, the license is rather pricey.
Intermapper is a very powerful and relatively straightforward network monitoring tool that could do with some interface improvements.
